Hip Hop as the Key to Unlocking Student Engagement

My research objective is to establish Hip Hop as an ingenious tool for stimulating creativity, fostering critical thinking, and facilitating inclusion inside the classroom. For, I have discovered -- most especially for nonwhite students who often feel ostracized and isolated within higher education -- that by placing value on students' voices, they become more willing to share. Thus, skillful and savvy educators will appreciate how Hip Hop is an often misunderstood genre that is truly an accessible, user-friendly tool that walks students through all increasingly complex learning objectives featured in Bloom's Taxonomy: 1) remembering, 2) understanding, 3) applying, 4) analyzing, 5) evaluating, and 6) creating.

Hence, asking students to synthesize complex ideas about society's political economy succinctly and creatively in rhyming couplets effectively demonstrates mastery of the critical thinking skills we as educators want them to learn. Hip Hop is indeed pedagogy since it helps me meet students ""where they are at,"" and encourages them not to bottle up their inner thoughts and feelings. In turn, Hip Hop's preference for authentic self-expression increases student participation in class and helps numerous students channel outwardly their internal ideations constructively. Hip Hop provides a platform for higher-order thinking that should no longer be overlooked.

Hip Hop Heritage & Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy in the Classroom

For the last five years, the Reinwardt Academy has offered a third-year elective module: Hip Hop Heritage. To date, 77 students have taken the course. Marlous van Gastel presents a case study of the development of the module and discusses the lessons learned, with a specific focus on the aspect of heritage and pedagogy. In this session participants will also experience some of the methods and practices. We are gonna practice what we preach and share thoughts, knowledge, experiences and ideas about Hip Hop heritage and critical Hip Hop pedagogy.
