Joseph Coughlan Allen

Joseph Coughlan-Allen is a MSCA postdoctoral research fellow at University of Oslo’s RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion. His project is titled FUNCTUMUS: the functional turn in music and examines the appropriation of music for functional purposes (i.e., mood regulation or activity management) and the resulting effects on musical practices (using lo-fi hip hop and its rebranding as “beats to relax/study to” as a case study). His research interests include the meaning and interpretation of sound and music, and music recordings in particular.
